Ceratostema Pedunculatum 

A well-established epiphytic shrub in the Ericaceae family, native to the Andean cloud forests and a significant component of that montane flora. It produces elegant, pendent, cylindrical flowers in vibrant pink to purple with long, tapering lanceolate lobes, adapted for hummingbird pollination in its native habitat. Like others in the genus, it grows as a pendant epiphyte with coriaceous leaves and is best displayed where its hanging flowers can be appreciated. Never remove spent peduncles.

• Light: Bright filtered indirect light, equivalent to dappled forest canopy; avoid direct intense sun which scorches the foliage.

• Soil: Open, acidic epiphytic mix of orchid bark and perlite, or mounted on cork with sphagnum; excellent drainage essential. Use rainwater or reverse osmosis water to prevent mineral buildup.

• Temperature/Humidity: Cool to intermediate temperatures — daytime 65-77°F with a distinct nighttime drop to 50-60°F; high humidity of 60-80%+ is essential, with good airflow at all times.

• Watering: Keep consistently moist but never waterlogged; water thoroughly when the top layer feels slightly dry, allowing excess to drain completely.

• Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a low-pH ericaceous formula during active growth; sensitive to fertilizer salt buildup. Reduce in winter.
