Anthurium Fornicifolium

A small-growing epiphytic species described by Croat, Yates, and Hayworth in 2005 from the wet forests of the eastern Andean slopes of Ecuador — native to the Pastaza region and classified in the western Amazonia Anthurium group. A compact, pendant-leaved species well suited to hanging baskets, elevated shelving, or terrarium culture, with a growth habit and scale that make it particularly practical for collectors with limited space. The species name fornicifolium references the arched, vaulted character of the leaves.

  • Light: Bright filtered indirect light; avoid direct sun which damages the delicate leaf structure.

  • Soil: Open, lightly moisture-retentive epiphytic mix; lightly moistened sphagnum moss or a chunky bark and perlite blend both suit it well. Good drainage essential.

  • Temperature/Humidity: Warm, stable temperatures between 65-79°F; high humidity of 70-80% is essential for maintaining the smooth texture and glossy leaf finish.

  • Watering: Allow the top inch of medium to dry between waterings; water 1-2 times per week depending on conditions. Keep consistently but lightly moist — never waterlogged.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 4-6 weeks during active growth; light, consistent feeding supports steady growth. Reduce in winter.
