Anthurium Veitchii Narrow
Anthurium veitchii (narrow form)
The King Anthurium — an epiphytic species native to the cloud forests of Colombia, prized for its extraordinarily elongated, pendant, corrugated leaves with deeply impressed lateral veins that give the surface a dramatically ribbed, pleated texture. The narrow form is distinguished by slender leaves with the lateral veins spaced more closely together, producing a more tightly ribbed appearance than the wide form. New leaves emerge in a coppery flush before hardening to glossy green, and can reach several feet in length on mature specimens. A slow grower; an elevated or hanging position allows the pendant leaves to extend to their full length.
-
Light: Bright indirect light supports the largest, most corrugated leaves; avoid direct sun which scorches the foliage.
-
Soil: Very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum, or grown in pure sphagnum; excellent drainage and aeration essential. Never waterlogged.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Cool to warm temperatures between 60-80°F, avoiding extremes above 85°F; high humidity of 70%+ is essential — leaf crisping is the primary symptom of insufficient humidity. Provide good air circulation.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — water when the top inch approaches dryness. Never waterlog; never allow to dry out fully.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced or high-nitrogen liquid fertilizer monthly during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
