Anthurium Warocqueanum × Waterburyanum
A cross between two of the most closely related and complementary pendant velvet anthuriums in cultivation. Anthurium warocqueanum, the Queen Anthurium, brings its immense, dark, near-black velvety pendant leaves and crystalline white venation. Anthurium waterburyanum, its close Colombian and Ecuadorian relative offers its distinct leaf constitution and proportions that make it a recognized separately collected species. The cross produces large, elongated, deeply velvety pendant leaves with bold white venation inheriting from both parents simultaneously — the pendant habit, dark surface, and white vein contrast that define the velvet pendant anthurium ideal, expressed with the additional vigor typical of a first-generation hybrid between two closely allied species.
-
Light: Bright but genuinely soft indirect light — the dark velvet surface is sensitive to bleaching under harsh exposure. Deepest coloration develops under consistent gentle indirect light.
-
Soil: Very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage and aeration; waterlogging is the primary cultivation failure.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Cool to warm temperatures between 60-78°F with meaningful day-to-night differential; high humidity of 70-80%+ is essential — inherited from both montane cloud forest parents.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — never waterlogged, never fully dry. Consistency matters more than any specific schedule; fluctuations stress this cross more than stable slightly suboptimal conditions.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during active growth; supplement with calcium and magnesium at half strength. Reduce in winter.
