Anthurium Wendlingeri
A pendant strap-leaf anthurium native to the cloud forests of Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia, growing as an epiphyte with long, narrow, velvety pendant leaves that hang freely from tree branches in the humid montane understory. Distinguished within the pendant group by its uniquely coiled, corkscrew-spiraling spadix — unlike any other species in the genus — and its deeply velvety, elongated leaves that can reach several feet in length on well-grown specimens. An elevated or hanging position is essential to allow the pendant leaves to hang to their full length. Never remove the peduncles after flowering.
-
Light: Bright to moderate indirect light; the velvet surface is sensitive to direct sun which bleaches and scorches the leaves.
-
Soil: Open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage; never waterlogged. Well suited to mounting or hanging baskets.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 70%+ is essential — the velvety pendant leaves desiccate in dry air.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — allow only the top inch to approach dryness between waterings. Never waterlog; never allow to dry out fully.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
*Imported and acclimated for minimum 4 weeks in moss/perlite. Do not repot for at least 30 days after arrival.
