Philodendron Heterocraspedon
A scarce canopy-climbing aroid from the wet lowland and lower montane rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador, described by Croat and Bay in 2008. It produces long, elongated leaves with a matte-gloss finish, softly undulating margins, and deeply impressed primary veins that give the foliage a drawn, architectural quality. Juvenile leaves are narrower and simpler; mature foliage develops greater width, stronger venation, and more pronounced margin undulation. A moss pole is essential — the plant responds to firm support with broader, more textured leaves and tighter internodes.
-
Light: Bright indirect light; tolerates lower light but develops the best leaf definition in bright filtered conditions. Avoid direct sun which scorches the leaves.
-
Soil: Very airy, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; root oxygenation matters more than the specific medium. Never waterlogged.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-85°F, never below 55°F; stable humidity of 60-80% supports the best foliage. Keep away from drafts.
-
Watering: Water once the top 1-2" of medium has dried; keep evenly moist but never soggy. Overwatering and root rot are the primary cultivation failures.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength monthly during spring and summer; leaf tip burn signals over-feeding. Reduce in fall and winter.
