Hoya Heuschkeliana Variegata
A compact, trailing epiphyte native to the Philippines, grown for both its foliage and flowers. The variegated form pairs small, thick oval leaves edged in creamy yellow to white margins with clusters of small, waxy, bell-shaped flowers in pink or yellow that carry a distinctive buttered-popcorn fragrance. Slower-growing than the standard green form due to reduced chlorophyll, and best kept slightly root-bound to encourage blooming. Never remove the peduncles after flowering — new flower clusters develop from the same spurs.
-
Light: Bright indirect light maintains the best variegation contrast and supports blooming; the lighter sectors sun-stress attractively under good light but scorch under harsh direct sun.
-
Soil: Very well-draining epiphytic mix of orchid bark and perlite; a light, airy substrate is essential. Never dense or waterlogged.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; moderate to high humidity of 50-70% supports the healthiest growth and most vigorous flowering.
-
Watering: Allow the top inch or two of medium to dry between waterings, reducing further in fall and winter; the waxy leaves store water well and the plant is more susceptible to overwatering than underwatering.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during active growth; a higher-phosphorus formula supports blooming. Reduce in winter.
