Philodendron Sterling Velvet
Philodendron sodiroi aff. × Philodendron melanochrysum
A hybrid combining P. sodiroi — known for its silver-patterned, heart-shaped leaves — with P. melanochrysum, the Black Gold Philodendron prized for its long, deeply velvety dark leaves and golden-green iridescent venation. The result is elongated, velvety leaves with a silvery sheen and dark ground, combining the shimmering patterning of sodiroi with the velvet texture and elongated form of melanochrysum. A climber that develops larger, more elongated leaves with vertical support.
-
Light: Bright indirect light for the deepest velvet coloration and best silvering; avoid direct sun which bleaches the velvet surface.
-
Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; moisture-retentive but never waterlogged — excellent drainage and aeration essential.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 60-80% supports the best velvet texture and clean leaf emergence.
-
Watering: Allow the top 1-2" of medium to dry between waterings; keep consistently moist but never soggy. Never waterlog.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during active growth; supplement with calcium and magnesium for best leaf quality. Reduce in winter.
