Anthurium coriaceum is a bold, terrestrial “bird’s‑nest” Anthurium recognized for its thick, leathery leaves and upright rosette form. Native to Brazil, it develops stiff, elongated foliage that gives the plant a sculptural, architectural presence. Its durability and tolerance for a wider range of conditions make it one of the more forgiving large‑leaf Anthuriums for collectors.

Light

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal.
  • Handles gentle morning sun due to its thicker leaf texture.
  • Insufficient light leads to stretched, weak growth.

Water

  • Water when the top 2–3 inches of substrate dry.
  • Avoid prolonged saturation; this species dislikes soggy soil.
  • More drought‑tolerant than velvety Anthuriums thanks to its leathery leaves.

Humidity

  • Thrives at 60–80%.
  • Tolerates average household humidity but grows faster and cleaner in higher humidity.

Temperature

  • Optimal range: 65–85°F.
  • Avoid cold drafts; growth slows below 60°F.

Soil

  • Prefers a chunky, fast‑draining terrestrial mix.
  • Ideal components:
    • Orchid bark
    • Pumice or perlite
    • Coco chips
    • Small amount of peat or coco coir
  • Appreciates structure and moderate moisture retention, but still requires excellent aeration.

Fertilizer

  • Feed every 2–4 weeks during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
  • Slow‑release pellets also work well.

Growth Habit

  • Forms a tight rosette of upright, rigid leaves.
  • Mature leaves become large and heavy, creating a vase‑like silhouette.
  • Growth is moderate but steady under good conditions.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Brown tips: low humidity or underwatering.
  • Pests: generally resilient but may attract thrips or mites in dry conditions.

Toxicity

  • Toxic if ingested; keep away from pets and children.
