Anthurium Luxurians

A Colombian endemic and one of the most recognizable species in the genus, distinguished by its deeply bullate leaf surface — each interveinal section raised into a pronounced convex blister that gives the blade a three-dimensional, quilted topography. The surface is deeply glossy, almost lacquered, with new growth emerging in dark chocolate to reddish-bronze before hardening to deep, iridescent dark green. Unlike most collector velvets, it grows terrestrially on shaded rocky forest floors at lower elevations. A genuinely slow grower and a foundational parent in a wide range of collector hybrids.

  • Light: Moderate to bright indirect light; more tolerant of lower light than many velvet species, but too little light slows an already slow grower and reduces the glossy iridescence. Avoid direct sun.

  • Soil: Very open, free-draining mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent aeration; notably susceptible to root rot. Never waterlogged.

  • Temperature/Humidity: Warm, stable temperatures between 65-80°F without the cool nights many Andean species need; high humidity of 70-80% is essential.

  • Watering: Allow the top inch or two to approach dryness between waterings; water thoroughly and drain completely. Never waterlog.

  • Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
