Anthurium Regale
A large terrestrial velvet anthurium native to the cloud forests of Peru, growing at 600-1,200 meters. It produces enormous, broadly heart-shaped, velvety leaves with prominent pale silver-white venation, capable of reaching several feet in length on mature, well-established specimens. New leaves emerge in a golden-green to bronze flush, typically producing one leaf at a time with considerable rest between. A foundational and frequently used parent in collector anthurium hybridization. An advanced species that rewards patient, consistent care.
-
Light: Bright but soft indirect light supports the largest leaves and best venation; avoid direct sun which bleaches the velvet surface.
-
Soil: Very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir in a wide, deep pot; excellent drainage and aeration essential. Never waterlogged.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 70-80% is essential for the velvet texture and clean leaf emergence.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — allow only the top inch to approach dryness between waterings. Never waterlog; never allow to dry out fully.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer supplemented with calcium and magnesium every 4-6 weeks during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
