Anthurium Veitchii 'King'
The King Anthurium — an epiphytic species from the rainforests of Colombia, distinguished by its enormous, elongated, pendant leaves with a dramatically corrugated, ridged surface where deeply impressed lateral veins create a pleated, almost metallic-looking texture. The 'King' form is the larger of the two recognized forms (distinct from the smaller 'Queen'), with mature leaves capable of reaching several feet in length on well-grown specimens. New leaves emerge in a coppery flush before hardening to deep glossy green. An elevated or hanging position is ideal to allow the pendant leaves to extend to their full length.
-
Light: Bright indirect light supports the largest leaves and most pronounced vein corrugation; avoid direct harsh sun which scorches the foliage.
-
Soil: Very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum; excellent drainage and aeration essential. Never waterlogged.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 70-80%+ is essential for clean leaf emergence and the fullest leaf development.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — allow only the top inch to approach dryness between waterings. Never waterlog; never allow to dry out fully.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
