Philodendron Spiritus Sancti

The undisputed holy grail of the philodendron world, Philodendron spiritus-sancti is a critically endangered species known from a single wild population in Espírito Santo, Brazil, where fewer than six individuals are believed to remain. Its leaves are extraordinarily long and narrow, tapering to an elegant point and hanging in graceful pendulous cascades from a climbing stem — a silhouette that photographs cannot fully capture. Mature leaves in ideal conditions can exceed two feet in length, and a well-grown climbing specimen is one of the most spectacular plants that can be kept indoors. Tissue culture has made genuine plants more accessible than they once were, but true Spiritus Sancti remains among the most coveted and expensive aroids in the world.

This species produces progressively larger, more dramatic leaves as it matures on a firm, tall moss pole — vertical support is essential, not optional. It performs best in bright indirect light; insufficient light produces smaller leaves and slows the already moderate growth rate considerably. Provide evenly moist, well-draining, highly aerated soil — chunky orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir — allowing the top 1-2" to dry between waterings. High humidity of 65-80% is strongly recommended, supported by a dedicated humidifier or enclosed growing environment. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-85°F, away from cold drafts at all times. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
