A cultivar of Alocasia micholitziana from the Philippines that has earned consistent collector attention and mainstream appeal in equal measure — a combination rare enough in the aroid world to be worth noting, and attributable entirely to the exceptional clarity and contrast of its foliage. The leaves are broadly arrow-shaped to sagittate, deeply rich dark green to near-black-green, and covered in a fine velvety texture that gives the surface a matte, light-absorbing quality that makes the contrasting venation stand out with particular force — that venation being bright, pure white, broad, and prominently raised along the primary veins in a clean geometric pattern that traces from the midrib outward to the leaf margins. The effect is immediate and striking from across a room — a plant that announces itself through pure contrast rather than through unusual form or surface complexity. Like all Alocasia, 'Frydek' is a rhizomatous grower subject to the dormancy behavior typical of the genus — periods of slowed growth or apparent dieback, particularly in response to cool temperatures or reduced light, that alarm new owners but from which the plant reliably recovers when conditions improve.

Light: Bright indirect light is the single most important factor for maintaining the deepest leaf coloration and most vivid venation contrast. Insufficient light causes leaves to lighten and white venation to lose its crisp definition.

Soil: Well-draining mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; as a rhizomatous terrestrial it is highly susceptible to root rot — excellent drainage is non-negotiable.

Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; cool temperatures below 60°F trigger dormancy. Humidity of 60-70% supports the best velvet texture and cleanest leaf emergence; below 50% causes marginal browning.

Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — allow the top 1-2" to dry between waterings. Never waterlog; overwatering is the primary cultivation failure with this species.

Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; reduce or stop during dormancy. A formula with added calcium supports the best leaf quality.

The plant arrived well packaged and with abundant stems in the pot. A few of the leaves have yellowed and I removed them. Following the sellers advice, -water, warmth and do not repot for at least 2 weeks-. Fingers crossed it will flourish!

quick shipping and healthy plants
The plant was great, it took some time acclimate to my place but it has grown new leafs to replace the ones lost and is keeping around 4 to 5. Very healthy roots.
I haven't made any customer service calls, but can only comment on what I've received. The plant was packed very well. Shipping is hard on tropicals, and the box had bunged corners (maybe it was dropped or handled roughly). The plant will lose 2 or 3 leaves, but it looks like it has a very healthy and strong constitution, so I'm confident I'm going to be very happy with it. The packing method was very good and only a very small amount of soil escaped into the box in spite of its rough handling. Overall I'm looking forward to a good experience with my new Alocasia Frydek!

Definitely did not look like photo, three of the four leaves were yellow, pretty small plant for the price.
I received my order and was initially upgraded to a bigger plant but it came extremely stressed and pretty much died. I reached out to the seller and they offered a replacement. They even allowed me to come & pick it up and gave me an additional plant for my troubles. I would definitely buy here again just because of the amazing customer service.

Came healthy and is still thriving after a few days. I get nervous buying alocasias since they aren’t too happy about environment change. Had her a few days and only one small leaf has yellowed a little. To be expected but otherwise it has 3 big leaves and some small ones and looks very healthy! Feel like I got my moneys worth

Had to knock one star down because I did see a spider mite with my magnifier. Unlikely that it is the only one but it’s the only one I saw so I wouldn’t call this an “infected” plant. Overall looks as I expected for a frydek under shipping stress, yellowing leaves and kind of unrooted from jostling. I could tell a lot of care went into the packaging so I’ll blame that on the delivery for now.
