Anthurium Papillilaminum
A compact epiphytic species from the lowland rainforests of Colón and Darién Provinces in Panama, formally described by Croat and growing in the perpetually moist, shaded understory at low elevations. One of the most foundational parent species in collector anthurium hybridization — its thick, muscular, densely papillose-velvety leaf texture, characteristic ribbed and winged petioles, and deep mahogany to reddish-brown emergent coloration pass consistently and powerfully into its offspring, making it both a rewarding specimen and a cornerstone of the collector velvet hybrid world. Compact in habit relative to the scale of its foliage, remaining manageable indoors while producing leaves of substantial presence.
-
Light: Lower light than most velvet anthuriums — a genuine understory species; 150-300 fc indirect light supports the deepest coloration. Avoid high-intensity exposure which dulls the characteristic dark pigmentation.
-
Soil: Very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage and aeration; never waterlogged.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 70-80%+ is essential for the velvet surface quality and cleanest leaf emergence. The species is notably sensitive to humidity drops.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — allow only the top inch to approach dryness between waterings. Never allow to dry out fully; never waterlog.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer supplemented with calcium every 4-6 weeks during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
