Anthurium Warocqueanum × Waterburyanum

A cross between two of the most closely related and complementary pendant velvet anthuriums in cultivation — species so similar in their ecological origin, growth habit, and aesthetic character that crossing them reads less like a contrast hybrid and more like a distillation, concentrating and amplifying the shared traits that make both parents so coveted while introducing the hybrid vigor that makes the offspring more accessible and robust than either pure species alone. Anthurium warocqueanum, the Queen Anthurium, needs no extended introduction in collector circles — the Colombian cloud forest endemic with its immense, dark, near-black velvety pendant leaves and crystalline white venation that represents the benchmark of the velvet anthurium group. Anthurium waterburyanum, its close Colombian and Ecuadorian relative, shares the same pendant, elongated cordate leaf form, the same deep velvety surface, and similarly prominent white venation, but with a distinct leaf constitution — slightly different proportions, vein structure, and the particular character that makes it a recognized and separately collected species rather than simply a warocqueanum variant. The cross produces large, elongated, deeply velvety pendant leaves with bold white venation inheriting from both parents simultaneously — the pendant habit, dark surface, and white vein contrast that define the velvet pendant anthurium ideal, expressed with the additional vigor typical of a first-generation hybrid between two closely allied species. Individual seedlings show variation in leaf proportion and vein intensity while consistently expressing the defining shared character of both parents.

An elevated position is essential — the pendant leaves must hang freely to develop to their full length and display their full character, making a high shelf, hanging basket, or tall climbing support the preferred configuration. Provide bright but soft indirect light, protecting the dark velvet surface from direct sun which bleaches and dulls the characteristic coloration. Keep the medium consistently but lightly moist in a very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage; never allow waterlogging. High humidity of 70-80%+ is essential — inherited from both montane cloud forest parents. Maintain cool to warm temperatures between 60-78°F; like warocqueanum, this cross appreciates cooler conditions and day-to-night temperature differential more than most velvet anthuriums. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
