The sole species in its genus and one of the most botanically distinct aroids in cultivation, Zamioculcas zamiifolia — native to the seasonally dry forests of eastern Africa from Kenya through Tanzania to South Africa — is already exceptional in its standard form for the near-indestructible, semi-succulent constitution that has made it a staple of offices, lobbies, and low-light interiors worldwide. The 'Variegata' cultivar takes this proven foundation and adds a variegation layer of genuine collector appeal: irregular splashes, streaks, and sectoral patches of cream, pale yellow, and soft white across the thick, waxy, pinnately arranged leaflets, with each stem producing its own unrepeatable pattern ranging from fine speckled marbling to bold half-moon sectoral coverage against the deep glossy green ground. What makes this cultivar particularly interesting is that the variegation plays out across a leaf architecture unlike most aroids — the leaflets are small, oval, and waxy rather than broad and soft, carried in precise alternating rows along smooth, thick petioles that arise directly from the potato-like underground rhizomes that give the entire ZZ genus its legendary drought tolerance and survival capacity. The rhizomes store water and nutrients so efficiently that the plant can survive extended periods of neglect that would kill most variegated plants outright — making 'Variegata' one of the most genuinely forgiving chimeric variegated houseplants available. Growth is slow, slower than the standard green form, as the reduced chlorophyll in variegated sectors reduces overall photosynthetic capacity — but the architectural, sculptural quality of the plant and its low-maintenance constitution more than compensate.

Bright indirect light is the most important variable for maintaining strong variegation expression — the 'Variegata' form needs more light than standard ZZ to sustain the metabolism of its chlorophyll-reduced sectors and keep the cream and yellow tones vivid rather than fading. Avoid direct harsh sun, which scorches the pale variegated leaflets. Water very conservatively — allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as the rhizomes store ample moisture and overwatering leading to rhizome rot is the primary and essentially only way to kill a ZZ. A well-draining mix of cactus soil with added perlite suits it well. Average household humidity is perfectly adequate — no special humidity requirements. Maintain temperatures between 65-80°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
