Philodendron sp. × Spiritus-Sancti
A hybrid cross involving Philodendron spiritus-sancti — the critically endangered Brazilian endemic reduced to fewer than six known wild plants, and one of the most coveted species in the genus for its dramatic narrow, pendulous, finely tapering leaves — paired with an unidentified sp. parent whose rounder, more broadly cordate character softens the extreme strap-leaf silhouette of the pure species in juvenile growth. The interplay between the two parents is visible across different leaf sizes on the same plant: younger and smaller leaves display the broader, open-sinused, heart-shaped form of the sp. parent, while larger and more mature leaves progressively reveal the spiritus-sancti influence in the distinctive elongated, deeply tapering blade that narrows dramatically toward its pointed tip and develops the characteristic arching lateral venation of the species. The leaf surface is glossy, smooth, and deep green without velvet texture or contrasting vein coloration — the visual interest is entirely in the extraordinary leaf silhouette and the progressive transformation from broad juvenile to elongated mature form. Petioles are smooth, green to cream, and long, carrying the large leaves in a pendant to spreading arrangement. At this seedling stage — already showing leaves exceeding a foot long in a small container — this hybrid demonstrates the vigor typical of a well-made first-generation cross, and the leaf size will increase substantially as it climbs.
A firm tall moss pole is essential for encouraging the climbing hemiepiphytic habit and achieving the most dramatically elongated mature leaf expression — the spiritus-sancti influence becomes progressively more pronounced the higher the plant ascends. Provide bright indirect light; this lineage performs across a reasonably wide light range and is less humidity-sensitive than many collector aroids. Water when the top inch of the medium approaches dryness in a very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir — dense compacted media is particularly detrimental. Humidity of 60-75% supports the best growth though the plant is relatively tolerant. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-80°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
