Anthurium Warocqueanum Esmeralda 'Dark Queen'
A refined cultivar of the Queen Anthurium combining the 'Esmeralda' selection's slightly narrower, thick, leathery leaves and muted venation with notably dark, deep green to near-black foliage — distinct from the lighter emerald tone of the standard Esmeralda. It produces elongated, velvety pendant leaves with subtle veining, capable of reaching impressive lengths on a well-grown specimen. An elevated position is ideal to allow the pendant leaves to hang to their full length.
-
Light: Bright but soft indirect light — the dark velvet surface is sensitive to bleaching under harsh exposure; avoid direct sun to protect the velvety texture.
-
Soil: Very open, chunky mix of orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss with excellent drainage and aeration; waterlogging is the primary cultivation failure.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Cool to warm temperatures between 65-80°F; very high humidity of 70-90% is essential — best kept in a greenhouse cabinet or near a humidifier. Ensure good airflow to prevent bacterial leaf spots.
-
Watering: Water when the top inch of medium approaches dryness; keep evenly moist but never soggy. Consistency matters more than any specific schedule.
-
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer; supplement with calcium and magnesium. Reduce in winter.
