Philodendron sp. Colombia
An undescribed terrestrial species collected from the Colombian rainforests and circulating in the collector trade under the provisional geographic name that references its origin — a plant whose formal botanical description has not yet been published but whose distinct character has earned it a consistent collector following in its own right. Also known in trade as Philodendron sp. 'Silver', it is a terrestrial creeper with a rhizome-level, ground-spreading habit — it does not climb — producing large, broadly heart-shaped leaves with a quilted, subtly textured surface and prominently impressed primary venation that creates a bold, almost prehistoric ribbed pattern across each deep green leaf. The leaf surface carries a silvery to metallic sheen in good indirect light that gives the plant its alternate silver trade name, and the leaves can reach impressive widths at maturity — comparable in scale to P. gloriosum or P. pastazanum but with a heavier, more prominently veined constitution closer to P. mcdowell. Red to burgundy petioles with attractively wavy margins add further ornamental interest. A sculptural, low-maintenance collector plant that rewards space and patience.
-
Light: Bright indirect light supports the best leaf size, deepest quilted vein definition, and most vivid silvery sheen. Tolerates moderate light but produces smaller, less characteristically textured leaves in dimmer conditions.
-
Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix rich in organic matter — orchid bark, coco coir, and perlite; excellent drainage essential. As a terrestrial, slightly more moisture-retentive than strictly epiphytic species.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; humidity of 60-80% supports the best leaf quality and most prominent surface texture. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F.
-
Watering: Allow the medium to approach dryness between waterings but do not allow to dry out completely — more moisture-tolerant than climbing philodendrons but still susceptible to waterlogging. Water thoroughly and drain fully.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; supplement with calcium and magnesium for the best leaf quality and vein definition. Reduce in winter.
