Philodendron maximum is a large-leaved climbing species native to Brazil, Bolivia, and Ecuador. First described by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in the 19th century, it is admired for its massive, elongated foliage that can reach impressive sizes under optimal conditions. The leaves are typically glossy green with prominent venation, and the plant’s robust growth habit makes it a standout specimen in tropical collections.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light to support large leaf development. Avoid direct sun which can scorch foliage.
- Water: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Keep evenly moist but not soggy.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity (70–90%). Benefits from humidifiers, greenhouse setups, or terrariums.
- Temperature: Thrives between 65–85°F. Protect from drafts and cold below 60°F.
- Soil: Loose, well-draining mix with potting soil, perlite/pumice, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss to mimic rainforest substrate.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding in winter.
- Growth Habit: Vigorous climbing philodendron with very large, elongated leaves. Requires strong support to reach full size.
-
Common Issues:
- Yellow leaves: overwatering or nutrient imbalance.
- Brown edges: low humidity or underwatering.
- Pests: spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs; treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
- Toxicity: Not safe for pets or humans if ingested.
Key Notes:
Philodendron maximum thrives under carefully controlled tropical conditions. With bright indirect light, consistent moisture, and high humidity, it develops into a dramatic climbing specimen, prized for its enormous foliage and commanding presence in advanced collections.

You did not put my complete address for delivery! Box was temporary lost and plants were not delivered on time! They seemed to be ok!
I have purchased from Plantamani before and as with the previous plants I am not disappointed. This is a very healthy plant with large leaves, that was well packed and arrived undamaged. I highly recommend this seller.
The plant is beautiful, as always. Thank you.
This is the second Philodendron maximum I have purchased from this seller, and once again I am very pleased with my purchase. The plant is as it appears in pictures; very well packed; no broken leaves; a pleasure to do business with; recommended.
