Philodendron Patriciae is a rare climbing species native to Colombia, first described by botanist Thomas Croat in 2010. It is renowned for its exceptionally long, pendant leaves that can reach over three feet in length, with a graceful, rippling texture and prominent venation. This species is considered one of the most elegant philodendrons, often highlighted in advanced collections for its dramatic foliage and unique growth habit.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light to encourage large leaf development. Avoid direct sun which can scorch foliage.
- Water: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Keep evenly moist but not soggy. Overwatering can cause root rot.
- Humidity: Requires high humidity (70–90%) to thrive. Benefits from humidifiers, greenhouse setups, or terrariums.
- Temperature: Thrives between 65–85°F. Protect from drafts and cold below 60°F.
- Soil: Loose, well-draining mix with potting soil, perlite/pumice, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss to mimic rainforest substrate.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding in winter.
- Growth Habit: Climbing philodendron with extremely long, pendant leaves. Requires strong support and ample vertical space.
-
Common Issues:
- Yellow leaves: overwatering or nutrient imbalance.
- Brown edges: low humidity or underwatering.
- Pests: spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs; treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
- Toxicity: Not safe for pets or humans if ingested.
Key Notes:
Philodendron patriciae thrives under carefully controlled tropical conditions. With bright indirect light, consistent moisture, and high humidity, it develops into a spectacular climbing specimen. Its extraordinary pendant leaves and elegant form make it a centerpiece species for serious collectors.
