Philodendron Tortum
A climbing hemiepiphyte native to the Amazon basin, distinguished by its radically dissected, skeletal leaves — each blade reduced to a feather-like arrangement of narrow, finely divided segments that gives the species its common names of Skeleton Key and Feather-leaf Philodendron. Juvenile leaves are less dramatically dissected, becoming progressively more elaborate and finely cut as the plant climbs and matures. A moss pole is essential to achieve the full mature leaf form.
-
Light: Bright indirect light supports the most vigorous growth and most deeply dissected mature leaves. Avoid direct harsh sun.
-
Soil: Very open, chunky aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; the finely dissected leaf structure is correlated with sensitivity to root rot — excellent drainage essential.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-82°F; humidity of 60-70% supports the cleanest leaf emergence and most vigorous growth.
-
Watering: Allow the top 2" of medium to approach dryness between waterings; water thoroughly and drain completely. Never waterlog.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; supplement with calcium and magnesium for best leaf quality. Reduce in winter.
