Philodendron Whipple Way
One of the most dramatically variegated philodendrons ever introduced into cultivation — and that is not a superlative deployed lightly in a genus where extreme variegation is practically a competitive sport. 'Whipple Way' originated as a chimeric sport discovered in Los Angeles, California, introduced by collectors Dick and Ralph who named it after the street where the original mother plant was found, and it has since circulated among serious collectors worldwide as something approaching a holy grail of variegated aroids. The reason is immediately apparent: new leaves emerge in a near-total white to pale mint-white coloration with small pink and soft green speckles scattered across the blade surface — the chlorophyll content is so reduced in the most highly expressed leaves that the plant borders on the physiological limit of what a living leaf can sustain, yet the 'Whipple Way' manages it with remarkable consistency. As leaves age they mature through soft pink tones to a pale lime green, creating a plant that carries multiple distinct color stages simultaneously across different leaves on the same stem — pure white new growth against pink-maturing mid-leaves against lime-green older leaves, all at once. The leaves are elongated, lanceolate, with a leathery texture and prominent midrib, carried in the upright climbing habit of the erubescens lineage. Under brighter light conditions the variegation intensifies further, with some leaves becoming almost entirely white with only faint green speckling. Thinner, more highly variegated leaves are more susceptible to scorch and drop than the thicker, greener ones — the grower's skill lies in finding the light level that maximizes the color without burning the chlorophyll-poor tissue.
Bright but filtered indirect light is the critical variable — bright enough to maintain and intensify the dramatic white variegation, filtered enough to prevent scorching the nearly-albino leaf sectors that lack protective pigmentation. A moss pole or climbing support is essential, as the plant climbs and produces progressively larger leaves as it ascends. Allow the top inch of medium to approach dryness between waterings in a chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark and perlite; overwatering is more dangerous here than with fully green philodendrons as the reduced chlorophyll means slower overall metabolism. Humidity of 60-70% supports the best growth and cleanest leaf emergence. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-82°F. This is a slow grower — patience is essential. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
